Instructor: Anna Sullivan

Grade: 9th

Welcome: I want to take this opportunity to welcome each and every one of you to World History Class. In this class, you will be investigating, interpreting, analyzing and forming your own opinion about the world before and around us. What you learn in this class will enable you to be better students, thinkers and citizens of the United States. So, get ready for the adventure as we will work and learn every day.

Goal: The main goal of this class is to create active and involved thinkers of this society. Students will be expected to analyze and explore the ideas of those before us.

Definition of History: History is the recognition and interpretation of past events and the patterns of their cause and effect relationships.

Required Materials:

3 ring binder (not a spiral bound notebook)

Notebook paper

Tab dividers

Flash drive (jump/zip drive)

Pencil or pen (no red ink please or markers..)

Game Plan: For the most part, we will be learning about everything that has happened throughout history before today. The cool thing is that we get to analyze it from a modern day perspective and then interpret what those of the past must have thought and felt. Then we get to really dive into the philosophical ideology, art, inventions and such to understand the impact it has on our society today. Fun!

• What is Culture? *What is religion? * Renaissance and Reformation

• Age of Exploration *Age of Revolution *Industrialization

• World at War * Cold War * 21st Century

Grading Policy: Grading for this class will be much like that of your other classes. However, not everything you do will be graded. The grade is not the reward, the knowledge that you gain and learning how to use that which you have gained is the reward.

90-100-A

80-89-B

70-79-C

60-69-D

59 and Below-Failing

Tutoring: Tutoring services will be set at a later date but will not begin until after Fall Break. I will inform you later when and where this will take place.

Expectations: Knowing how to behave is nothing new to most of you, but just in case there are a few of you who were not taught let me explain to you how this works.

1. Act appropriately: If acting in a mature manner is not in your realm of possibility, then see me for lessons. It is ok to joke around sometimes, but there is a time and place and it is up to you to know when that time is and where that place is.

2. Bell Ringer: I begin every lesson with some sort of bell ringer questions, scenario, reading or other activity. If you are in your seat, working on this when the tardy bell rings, then congratulations, you are on time. If you are not, then you are tardy and will be written up for such.

3. I expect you to have manners at all times. I understand that you may not have to at your home, but we do here at Lewis County High School. So, please, thank you, your welcome, and other niceties are a must.

4. I expect that just as you would like to be respected, you will respect the thoughts, ideas, wishes and words of others. I do not expect to see or hear of anyone being harassed, bullied or made fun on in any way. I have a zero tolerance policy on that.

5. I expect you to work from bell to bell. You are here to learn not to socialize! (Contrary to popular thought) So, do your best on everything we do. If you insist on packing up early, then you get to stay late. Nice deal huh

6. I expect you to get into your assigned seats and begin work daily. I don’t expect that I will have to tell you every day to get started. Thank you for that!

Bathroom Breaks: For the most part, I do not allow you to leave my room. When you are not here, you cannot learn. Therefore, unless you are bleeding, dying or in labor, don’t ask to leave. If however, the occasion of an emergency arises, you will be given two passes to use per semester. See directions on your passes. If you really need to go and you forgot to bring your passes with you, you may still go but will receive one pink slip for doing so.

Late Work: I do not like to accept late work however; I do understand that things happen. Therefore, if your work is not turned in on the day it is due, I will deduct points for every day it is late.

Notebook: I will ask that you keep a notebook divided into three sections. Section 1-Bellringers, Section 2-Notes, Section 3 – Reflections, and Handouts. 200pts can be yours for keeping a nice notebook. If you need assistance with this, please do not hesitate to ask.
